Studies indicate that massage therapy performed during pregnancy can reduce
*Edema related Carpal Tunnel Symptoms
*Round ligament/ Pelvic Pain
*Decrease symptoms of depression
*Relieve muscle aches and joint pains
Improve labor outcomes and newborn health
What to Expect:

Teresa does not use the specialty tables with the belly holes in them because they are prone to cause more muscle ligament pain plus sideline is the safer choice for the baby. Teresa will discuss any pain or complications you are experiencing and together decide the best massage protocol.
Please note that if you are experiencing a high risk pregnancy, a doctors consent is required prior to your first appointment.
Seven reasons massage helps during high risk pregnancy include its ability to:
- Reduce stress, encourage healthful sleep and promote relaxation – especially needed during a high-risk pregnancy
- Provide emotional support and physical nurturing – especially for those alone during their pregnancy or who feel scared because of their risk status
- Reduces or alleviates neck, back and joint pain caused by posture, muscle weakness, tension, extra weight or imbalance – especially needed in women over age 35, who are obese or who are carrying multiple fetuses
- Relieves muscle spasms, cramps and fibrosis – all of which can be intensified by several pregnancy risk factors
- Via relaxation, reduces blood pressure – especially valuable to a woman with pre-eclampsia
- Increase blood and lymph circulation which minimizes the edema, varicose veins and leg cramps common with pregnancy and exacerbated in many high-risk pregnancies
- Encourage deeper and easier breathing – especially important for women with asthma or lung problems

Essential Oils and Pregnancy
The Rainforest Refresh
The Rainforest Refresh is not your typical massage. Based on research conducted by Dr. David Hill, an expert in integrative medicine and the therapeutic applications of essential oils, the Rainforest Refresh utilizes eight different essential oils carefully chosen based on your specific needs. The treatment starts with a full body 60-minute massage to relieve you of your daily stresses followed by another thirty minutes of essential oil work on your back. This combination of massage therapy and aromatherapy in the Rainforest Refresh will not only revive your senses, but rebalance, repair, and reenergize your body, mind, and spirit. (Treatment 90 minutes)
Horchata Body Polish
The happiness you experience while sipping on horchata is now multiplied through this multisensorial treatment. The session begins with a scalp massage to calm and relax the mind. Following the scalp massage, a full body exfoliation is performed using a scrub of sugar cane, rice flour, cinnamon, and Mexican vanilla. When worked into the skin, these ingredients promote total body wellness. Microcirculation is increased, the lymphatic system is stimulated, and the epidermis is fortified resulting in baby soft skin and a lasting glow.
Taste of Havana
The feeling and fragrance of an island getaway without even having to leave the state. The Taste of Havana treatment first lulls you into vacation level bliss with a full body mojito sugar body scrub which exfoliates and rejuvenates your skin. Then watch all your worries melt away with a Cuban rum massage which will warm your soul, release your tension, and promote circulation throughout your body. Lastly, a tropical coconut oil is applied to seal in hydration, moisture, and that tranquil island feeling. (Treatment 90 minutes)
Sugar and Smoke
The perfect treatment for you or your honey. A gentle sugar and honey exfoliation treatment is applied to your back followed by a deep relaxing massage. A special proprietary massage oil of tobacco essence (safe for topical use), vetiver essential oil, and rum is used for a deeply relaxing experience.
This treatment is tribute to womanhood as well as a celebration of it. Mayahuel is the goddess of the agave plant and is also seen as a symbol of femininity and fertility in Mexican mythology. Agave is a cousin of the aloe plant and has many of the same beneficial effects in our health. The Mayahuel treatment uses an agave tequila scrub for exfoliation followed by an agave infused coconut oil for hydration. This deceptively simple treatment will reconnect you to your feminine energy and have you harnessing your goddess potential in no time.
Aztec Cocoa Spice Wrap
The Aztecs believed that cacao seeds were the gift of Quetzalcoatl, Mayahuel’s great love. In honor of this love, I’ve created a decadent chocolate treatment. Your body will first be dry brushed to awaken your lymphatic system and prepare your skin for chocolate spiced heaven via a cinnamon and cocoa infused mud wrap. A layer of cocoa butter is then applied followed by a warm stone back massage. The treatment is concluded with an organic chocolate coconut facemask. (Treatment 90 minutes)

About the name:
Mayahuel ( Maya Well) is is the female divinity associated with the agave plant among the Aztec cultures of central Mexico. She is recognized as the goddess of fertility. Protector of mature wombs that turn into life.
As a massage therapist that has specialized in prenatal/ postnatal massage throughout my 20 plus year career, the name spoke to me on a very spiritual level. The name Mayahuel also honors the strongest women I know. My family is blessed to have amazing strong women, especially my mother she taught me about strength and compassion, and natural healing. Her roots like the blue agave hails from Jalisco, Mexico.
Teresa Avelar, Owner & Therapist of Mayahuel Massage & Body Therapy (formerly Between Heaven & Earth Body Therapy). I graduated from the National Holistic Institute in Emeryville, CA back in 1996. I found my passion pretty early in my career. It have taken a variety of ongoing educational classes that focus on my passion and specialty of Prenatal Massage. I have completed multiple Prenatal Certifications, as well as training in Hot Stone Therapy, Aromatherapy, Fertility Massage, Deep Tissue and a variety of Body Therapy treatments. I've worked with various chiropractors throughout San Mateo County as well as a lead therapist/ educator at the Pacific Athletic Club in Redwood Shores, CA. I loved the spa environment but missed the personal connection with my clients. I've been blessed to have a location in San Bruno since 2011 to expand my private practice where I could blend a pampering and relaxing setting with therapeutic work. I am constantly learning and looking for new techniques to share with my clients and incorporate them into a tailored massage. Currently my training has led me to Belize to take an extensive course in the Arvigo Mayan Abdominal Massage Therapy Ⓡ. I’m excited to share everything I’ve learned with you.
I look forward to meeting you and having a professional relationship where I can exceed your expectations of a therapeutic massage and/ or pampering body treatment.
